Vasyl Lomachenko and George Kambosos have a date set for their world title fight live from RAC Arena in Perth, Australia on May 11 (ET). The pair squares off in a 12-round bout with the vacant IBF lightweight title on the line.
Ukrainian southpaw Vasyl Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) is looking to return to winning ways and once again become champion. In his previous outing last May in Las Vegas, the 35-year-old future hall of famer dropped a unanimous decision against former undisputed 135-pound champion Devin Haney in his attempt to claim the title. Before that, Oxnard, California-based three-weight world champion earned a pair of wins by unanimous decision against Jamaine Ortiz and Richard Commey, and TKO’d Masayoshi Nakatani in the ninth round.
Former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos (21-2, 10 KOs) won his previous bout last July in Shawnee, Oklahoma by majority decision against Maxi Hughes. Prior to that, Sydney’s 30-year-old twice fought Haney for the undisputed title in Melbourne, but lost by unanimous decision on both occasions.
Earlier in their respective careers, both, Lomachenko and Kambosos faced common opponent – Teofimo Lopez. The latter claimed the unified WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight belts against Lomachenko by UD in October 2020. Kambosos took the belts from Lopez by split decision in November 2021.
The showdown was reported as “set” by ESPN citing sources, today. The official announcement is expected shortly.
